Open the Stripe US fee calculatorFor large payments, the cheapest way to get paid through Stripe is not a card at all. ACH Direct Debit pulls money straight from the customer’s US bank account for a fraction of the cost. Choose ACH in the Stripe fee calculator to compare.
The rates
- Cards: 2.9% + $0.30.
- ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, capped at $5 per payment.
The difference grows with size
| Price | Card | ACH Direct Debit |
|---|---|---|
| $50.00 | $1.75 | $0.40 |
| $200.00 | $6.10 | $1.60 |
| $625.00 | $18.43 | $5.00 |
| $1,000.00 | $29.30 | $5.00 |
| $2,500.00 | $72.80 | $5.00 |
| $10,000.00 | $290.30 | $5.00 |
At $625 the ACH fee reaches its $5 cap. On a $10,000 invoice, ACH costs $5 while a card costs $290.30.
The trade-offs
- Speed: ACH payments take several business days to confirm, compared with instant card authorisation.
- Failed payments: if the customer’s account has insufficient funds, the payment fails later, and Stripe charges a fee for failures.
- Disputes: ACH disputes also carry a fee, and customers can dispute for a period after payment.
Where ACH fits best
- B2B invoices over a few hundred dollars.
- Rent, tuition, retainers and memberships with fixed monthly amounts.
- Any business where waiting a few days for funds is fine.
How to encourage it
Offer ACH clearly at checkout or on your invoices. Some businesses give a small discount for bank payments, which still leaves them ahead.
For other invoicing options, compare Square invoice fees and PayPal invoice fees.
