What you pay on top of your Copart bid
Your winning bid is only part of the price. Copart adds a buyer fee that rises with the sale price, and it is the largest fee on most lots. For clean-title vehicles paid for by a secured method such as wire transfer, the buyer fee ranges from $25 on very cheap lots to $900 on bids between $10,000 and $15,000, and is 7.5% of the bid above $15,000.
If you win through Copart’s website or app, a virtual bid fee applies, from $50 up to $160 depending on the price. Placing a pre-bid instead costs slightly less. Every vehicle also carries a gate fee, usually $95, for moving it to the loading area, and a environmental fee of around $15.
What this estimate leaves out
Copart’s fees vary by title type, payment method, buyer type and yard. Non-clean titles, such as salvage and certificate of destruction lots, use a higher buyer fee schedule. Late payment and storage fees are charged if you do not pay and collect on time. Broker fees apply if you buy through a broker without a dealer license. Treat this calculator as a planning estimate and check the fee table in your Copart account before bidding.
Setting your maximum bid
Add transport, repairs and the price you expect to sell for. The calculator works backward through the fee tiers to show the highest bid that still gives you the profit you want. Stick to that number at auction, since each tier jump adds fees on top of the extra bid.
Frequently asked questions
How much are Copart fees on a $3,000 car?
For a clean-title lot won online at $3,000, the buyer fee is about $655, the virtual bid fee $110, plus a $95 gate fee and $15 environmental fee, which brings the total to about $3,875 before tax and transport.
Can I avoid the virtual bid fee?
Bidding in person at the yard, where available, avoids the virtual bid fee. Pre-bidding online uses a lower fee than live online bidding.
Why are fees higher for salvage titles?
Copart uses a separate, higher buyer fee schedule for non-clean title vehicles. Check your member fee page for the exact figures.
What happens if I pay late?
Copart charges a late payment fee if you miss the payment deadline, and daily storage once the free storage period ends.
