The fees Amazon charges US sellers

Every Amazon sale carries a referral fee, which is a percentage of the total price the buyer pays, including any shipping or gift wrap. For most categories the rate is 15%, with a minimum of $0.30 per item. Some categories use lower rates, such as 8% for consumer electronics and computers, and some change with the price: clothing is 5% up to $15, 10% from $15 to $20 and 17% above $20.

Media items such as books, video games, music and DVDs also carry a closing fee of $1.80 per item.

Individual vs Professional plan

The Individual plan has no monthly cost but charges $0.99 for every item sold. The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month with no per-item charge. If you sell more than about 40 units a month, Professional is cheaper. Enter your monthly unit volume in the plan section to spread the subscription across each sale.

FBA fees

With Fulfillment by Amazon you pay a fulfillment fee for each unit shipped, based on the product’s size tier and shipping weight. You also pay monthly storage for the space your inventory takes up in Amazon’s warehouses, and an inbound placement fee that depends on how you split shipments across fulfillment centers. These vary so much by product that we ask you to enter them. The fee preview in Seller Central, or Amazon’s revenue calculator, shows the exact figures for a specific ASIN.

Merchant fulfilled

If you ship orders yourself, switch fulfillment to FBM, enter what you charge the buyer for shipping and what the label costs you. Remember that Amazon’s referral fee applies to the shipping you charge too.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage does Amazon take?

For most categories Amazon keeps a 15% referral fee. Once you add FBA fulfillment and storage, total fees on a $25 product commonly reach 30% to 40% of the price.

Does the referral fee include shipping?

Yes. The referral fee is based on the total sales price, which includes shipping and gift wrap charges paid by the buyer.

Is FBA worth the cost?

FBA often wins for small, light, fast-selling products because it brings Prime eligibility. For heavy, bulky or slow-moving items, storage and fulfillment fees can make shipping yourself more profitable.

Are there fees if an item does not sell?

There is no fee for listing, but FBA inventory keeps building storage costs until it sells or is removed, and long-stored stock can attract aged inventory surcharges.
