How eBay fees work for US sellers

eBay charges most of its selling cost when the item sells, not when you list it. The main charge is the final value fee, a percentage of the total amount of the sale. That total includes the item price, the shipping and handling you charge and any sales tax the buyer pays. On top of that there is a per-order fee of $0.40 on orders over $10, or $0.30 on orders of $10 or less.

For most categories the final value fee is 13.6% on the first $7,500 and 2.35% on anything above that. A few categories are cheaper, such as guitars and basses at 6.7% or athletic sneakers at 8% once the price reaches $150. Books, movies and music are higher at 15.3%. Pick the right category in the calculator, because using the default rate on a guitar sale will overstate your fees by more than half.

Fees this calculator includes

  • Final value fee by category, including tiered rates above $7,500 (or $1,000 and $5,000 for watches and jewelry).
  • The $0.30 or $0.40 per-order fee.
  • Promoted Listings General ad fee at your chosen rate.
  • The 1.65% international fee when the buyer is outside the US.
  • The 10% Top Rated Plus discount on the final value fee.

It does not include store subscription fees, optional listing upgrades or the extra fee charged when a seller is below standard. If you have an eBay Store, your final value fee may be slightly lower in some categories; use the custom rate field to match your own invoice.

Reading your result

The receipt shows what the buyer paid, each fee as a separate line, and your payout. Add your item cost and the postage you actually pay to see net profit. The break-even price is the lowest sold price that covers every fee and cost you entered. If you add a profit target, the calculator shows the price you would need to list at to hit it.

Frequently asked questions

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping and handling you charge the buyer. Offering free shipping and raising the item price by the same amount produces almost the same fee.

Does eBay take a fee on sales tax?

Yes. eBay includes the sales tax the buyer pays when it works out the final value fee, even though eBay collects and sends the tax itself. Enter your buyers’ typical tax rate to include this.

Is there a fee to list on eBay?

Most sellers get up to 250 free listings a month. After that, an insertion fee of $0.35 per listing usually applies, and it is not refunded if the item does not sell.

When does eBay take its fees?

Fees are usually deducted from your payout before the money reaches your bank. Anything that cannot be deducted is billed on your monthly invoice.
