Refunds
You can refund a payment in full or in part from the Stripe Dashboard. Stripe does not return the original processing fee. On a full refund, you lose the whole fee.
| Payment | Total fees | Payout | Fees % |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20.00 | $0.88 | $19.12 | 4.40% |
| $50.00 | $1.75 | $48.25 | 3.50% |
| $100.00 | $3.20 | $96.80 | 3.20% |
| $250.00 | $7.55 | $242.45 | 3.02% |
| $500.00 | $14.80 | $485.20 | 2.96% |
If you refund 5% of your sales, that lost fee adds up to roughly 0.15% of revenue, plus the fixed part on every refunded order.
Disputes (chargebacks)
When a customer asks their bank to reverse a payment, the amount is taken from your balance and Stripe charges a $15 dispute fee. If you submit evidence and win, the payment and the fee are returned. If you lose, you lose both.
Reducing disputes
- Use a clear business name on card statements so customers recognise the charge.
- Send receipts and shipping confirmations with tracking.
- Make refunds easy. A quick refund costs less than a dispute.
- Use fraud tools on higher-risk payments.
Refund early when in doubt
If a customer complains and a dispute looks likely, refunding before they contact their bank saves the $15 fee and protects your dispute rate, which card networks monitor.
