Selling to customers abroad through Stripe is easy, but two extra charges can apply: one for the card being foreign and one for converting currency. Tick both boxes in the Stripe fee calculator to see the full cost.

International card fee

When a customer pays with a card issued outside the US, Stripe adds 1.5% to the standard 2.9% + $0.30.

Currency conversion fee

If the payment currency is different from your payout currency, Stripe adds 1% to convert it. Charging a UK customer in pounds and being paid out in dollars triggers this.

Stripe fees by card origin. Calculated with the default rates in our calculators.

$20.00$0.88$1.18$1.38
$50.00$1.75$2.50$3.00
$100.00$3.20$4.70$5.70
$250.00$7.55$11.30$13.80
$1,000.00$29.30$44.30$54.30

On $100, a domestic card costs $3.20. An international card with conversion costs $5.70.

Ways to reduce the cost

  • Charge in US dollars to avoid conversion, if your customers are happy to pay in dollars. They may face their own bank’s foreign transaction fee instead.
  • Hold balances in other currencies if you have costs in those currencies, where Stripe supports it for your account.
  • Offer local payment methods in markets where cards are expensive; some carry lower fees.
  • Build cross-border costs into international pricing.

Compared with PayPal

PayPal adds 1.5% for international payments too, and its conversion markup is usually larger. See PayPal international fees. For all Stripe charges, read Stripe fees explained.
