Square’s US processing rates
Square charges a flat rate per transaction with no monthly fee on its free plan. The rate depends on how the card is taken:
- In person with a Square reader, terminal or Tap to Pay: 2.6% + $0.15.
- Online through Square Online, checkout links or the online API: 2.9% + $0.30.
- Manually keyed cards and cards on file: 3.5% + $0.15.
- Invoices paid by card: 3.3% + $0.30. Paid by ACH bank transfer: 1% with a $1 minimum.
- Afterpay purchases: 6% + $0.30.
Businesses on Square’s paid Plus or Premium plans, or with high card volume, may have lower custom rates. Change the fee settings to match your account.
Getting paid
Square sends standard transfers to your bank at no cost, usually the next business day. Instant transfers arrive in minutes and cost 1.75% of the amount moved. Tick the instant transfer box to include it.
Why keyed-in payments cost more
Typing a card number in by hand carries more fraud risk than a chip or tap payment, so Square charges nearly a full percentage point more. On $10,000 a month of sales, moving from keyed entry to tap saves roughly $90.
