Open the Amazon US fee calculatorAmazon gives you access to the biggest online audience in the US, and in return it charges more types of fee than any other marketplace. They fall into three groups: selling fees, fulfillment fees and account fees. Put your product into the Amazon seller fee calculator to see how they combine.
Selling fees
The referral fee is charged on every sale as a percentage of the total price, including shipping and gift wrap. Most categories pay 15% with a $0.30 minimum. Some pay less (8% for computers and consumer electronics) and some use price bands. Our referral fees by category guide lists the main ones.
Media items such as books, DVDs, music and video games also pay a $1.80 closing fee.
Account fees
You choose between the Individual plan at $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan at $39.99 a month. Read Individual vs Professional to see which suits your volume.
Fulfillment fees
If you use FBA, Amazon charges:
- A fulfillment fee per unit, based on size tier and shipping weight.
- Monthly storage based on the cubic feet your stock uses, higher from October to December.
- An inbound placement fee depending on how many locations you send stock to.
- Aged inventory surcharges on stock held too long, plus fees for removals and returns processing in some categories.
If you ship orders yourself, you pay the carrier directly instead.
What it adds up to
| Price | Total fees | Payout | Fees % |
|---|---|---|---|
| $12.99 | $6.44 | $6.55 | 49.57% |
| $19.99 | $7.49 | $12.50 | 37.46% |
| $29.99 | $8.99 | $21.00 | 29.97% |
| $49.99 | $11.99 | $38.00 | 23.98% |
| $99.99 | $19.49 | $80.50 | 19.49% |
On a $29.99 product, fees come to roughly 30% of the price. On a $12.99 product they approach half of it. That is why low-priced products are so hard to make work on FBA.
Before you source a product
Run the numbers before you buy stock. Enter the target price, the product’s estimated FBA fee from Amazon’s revenue calculator, and your landed cost per unit. If profit after fees is less than about a quarter of the price, returns, ads and price drops can wipe it out. Our guide to FBA vs FBM profit helps with the next decision.
