Want your own numbers? The eBay calculator shows every fee and your profit as you type.
Open the eBay US fee calculatoreBay’s fees look simple until your first payout arrives smaller than expected. The good news is that almost everything comes from two charges, and once you understand what they are calculated on, you can predict your payout to the cent. You can test any sale in the eBay fee calculator as you read.
The two fees on every sale
The final value fee is a percentage of the total sale. For most categories it is 13.6% of the first $7,500 and 2.35% of anything above. The important detail is what counts as the total: item price, the shipping you charge and the sales tax the buyer pays. eBay collects and sends that tax itself, yet still charges its percentage on it.
The per-order fee is $0.40 on orders over $10 and $0.30 on orders of $10 or less. It is charged once per order, not once per item.
Fees you might pay before or around the sale
Most sellers get 250 free listings a month. Beyond that, an insertion fee of $0.35 per listing applies, whether the item sells or not. Optional listing upgrades such as subtitles add more. If you use Promoted Listings, the ad fee is only charged when the sale comes through the ad; our guide on what Promoted Listings really cost walks through it.
Sales to buyers outside the US add an international fee of 1.65% of the total.
What eBay takes at common prices
| Price | Total fees | Payout | Fees % |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $1.66 | $8.34 | 16.60% |
| $25.00 | $3.80 | $21.20 | 15.20% |
| $50.00 | $7.20 | $42.80 | 14.40% |
| $100.00 | $14.00 | $86.00 | 14.00% |
| $250.00 | $34.40 | $215.60 | 13.76% |
| $500.00 | $68.40 | $431.60 | 13.68% |
| $1,000.00 | $136.40 | $863.60 | 13.64% |
Notice how the fixed $0.40 matters more on cheap items. On a $10 sale, the fees are about 16.6% of the price; on a $250 sale they are about 13.8%. If you sell low-priced items, bundling them into lots is one of the easiest ways to keep more.
Category matters more than most sellers think
Guitars and basses pay 6.7%, athletic sneakers over $150 pay 8%, and books pay 15.3%. Picking the wrong rate when you estimate profit can put you off by several dollars on every sale. See the final value fee by category guide for the main rates.
Turning fees into a price
Knowing the fee is half the job. The other half is working backward from the profit you want. Enter your item cost, postage and target profit in the calculator and it shows the exact listing price you need. We cover the method step by step in how to price items on eBay for profit.
If you also sell handmade or vintage pieces, compare these numbers with Etsy’s fee structure before choosing where to list.
